Donald R. Rash, affectionately known as Don, 89, passed away on Wednesday April 1, 2026, in Liberal, Kansas. Don lived a life rich with dedication, generosity, and community service. His passing marks the loss of an all-around loving and generous man whose legacy will be cherished by many.
He was born on May 8, 1936, in Dewey County, Oklahoma, to Vernon Ray and Marjorie Wilma (Morrison) Rash.
On July 21, 1956 he married Priscilla Ann Thompson in Borger, TX.
Don’s career was marked by entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to his community. After moving to the Liberal area in 1965, he operated Rash Oil Service Station which eventually lead to Rash Oil Company. From 1970 to 1976, his business experienced significant growth, a testament to his hard work and vision. Beyond his business accomplishments, Don proudly served as a local politician, holding office as a Commissioner for both the City of Liberal and Seward County. Throughout his tenure, he tirelessly worked toward the growth and well-being of Liberal, earning a reputation as a true friend to the Southern Cheyenne Tribe.
Don's contributions extended far beyond business and politics. He served on numerous important boards, including the Seward County Historical Society, the State Banking Board of Kansas, the Board of Directors of Frontier Savings and Loan, the Liberal Air Museum, and the Southwest Medical Center. His philanthropic support for Dorothy's House and the Land of OZ is remembered through the beloved Dorothy Statues in the community. One of his notable civic achievements was helping oversee the widening of the overpass and expanding Kansas Avenue from two lanes to four lanes, enhancing infrastructure for Liberal residents.
An outdoorsman at heart, Don found joy in raising buffalo on his Three Tree Ranch near John Martin Reservoir in Colorado, where he cared for over 100 head of buffalo. His passion for Native American culture and history was profound. Don amassed an extensive Native American art collection and was recognized as a proud supporter of the Cheyenne Nation Tribe near Seiling, Oklahoma. He expressed his respect and solidarity annually through the generous donation of a buffalo for ceremonial use by the tribe. Alongside his cultural interests, Don also enjoyed collecting antique cars, reflecting his appreciation for history and craftsmanship.
Known for his wisdom, welcoming nature, and a great story teller, Don was extremely generous. Family and friends often remember him as a man who was always ready to bring joy and share good times. He particularly cherished moments spent with his grandchildren and friends. He leaves behind a profound legacy shaped by his love for family, commitment to community, and respect for cultural heritage. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him and the community he so deeply cared for.
Don is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey Rash (Kristi) of Turpin, Oklahoma and Todd Rash (Olga) of Canyon Lake, California; his brother Gary Lee (Joana) Rash of Syracuse, Kansas; his grandsons Dustin Rash and Shad (Soledad) Rash; and his granddaughters Angie Slemp and Cassie Hagman, and 10 Great Grandchildren.
