Jan King

Jan LuRene King was called home May 18, 2025, in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of 83, where she had lived for the past 25 years.

Jan was born in Liberal, Kansas on January 5, 1942, to Hazel Maude (Matkin) King and Rufus Gideon King, the youngest of six children.

Jan graduated from Liberal High School in 1959 where she was very active in high school and was the Basketball Queen in her Senior year. She went on to attend Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas but ultimately graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Education from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. Jan won the Miss Flipper contest that was connected with Pancake Day in 1962. Jan had a very successful career in the retail business. She worked for Macy’s and Rich’s department stores in Kansas and Georgia before returning to Kansas City to manage and become the buyer for the Chasnoff’s chain of department stores with 11 locations, known for its line of ready-to-wear ladies’ clothing. Jan started her own company “J-Sher Inc” with the focus to create wearable art after her stent at Chasnoff’s. One of her most favorite sayings was that she loved when all her possessions fit into her VW Bug. Jan was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Jan is survived by one sister, JoAnn (King) Sharp, one sister-in-law, Joann (Watson) King and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Rufus Alroy King and Gene Wilford King and two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Sammy Lane (King) and Wayne Cope, Carol Lea (King) and Tom Roberts and Gene Sharp.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 am on Friday November 14, 2025 at the Miller Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Rusty Husted, officiating. Burial will follow at the Liberal City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the scholarship established by her grandparents, the “ W.A. and Lou B. King Scholarship” at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS.
